G’day, I’m Chris Blamire from Total Supply Solutions. Thanks for clicking play and thanks again to Jena Dyco for having me on as their guest blogger today. When you start your new carpet cleaning business, your budget might be a little or a lot. Whether it’s a little or a lot, it’s the beginning. It’s your starting point from where you build momentum and confidence and additional income.
You’ve got to start somewhere, and sometimes a simple no frills startup can actually give you a competitive advantage. You know what? Many smart operators we’ve dealt with over the years have chosen to spend just 80% of their budget and set aside 20%.
Now, that’s smart. By putting their 20% aside, they’ve taken a whole lot of pressure off themselves. Success comes easier when you’ve got a clear mind and you’re not all stressed out. Where you start is not where you’ll end. You’ll learn and improve along the way. You don’t need 100% of the answers and all the fancy knick-knacks to start a successful carpet cleaning business.
There’ll be plenty of time for more advanced toys, and there’s a place for that, but is that place when you are just starting out? It’s kind of like when you have a baby. Before the baby arrives, you think you need to go and buy all those things that appear absolutely necessary only to discover you never use them.
My wife and I have a one year old and we learned the hard way on this. It’s frustrating and expensive, even though your intentions and motivations were right when you made those purchases. Regardless of your budget, here are three suggestions that will help you start a successful carpet cleaning business and live to tell the tale.
Number one, set a budget that you and your partner, if you have one, are comfortable with and don’t budge. Make sure your partner is in 100% agreement with you. You don’t want arguments distracting you throughout the startup phase of your new carpet cleaning business. Starting a business is all about improving your life, not about making it more difficult.
Number two, only spend 80% of your budget. Take the pressure off. Give yourself some financial breathing space for unplanned expenses or a slow start. Number three, plan the biggest part of your start up budget for business development, which includes training, marketing and admin stuff. That’s right. Spend more on that than anything else. You might be saying “What about the machine? Isn’t that important?” Well, it’s not if you don’t have any customers.
I’ve avoided the question, haven’t I? How much do you need to start a carpet cleaning business? Well, how much do you want to earn per hour after costs? That’s the key question you need to answer, but without doing that, let’s look at three options. Say you spend ,000, ,000 or ,000 on equipment, which means you might spend ,500, ,000 or ,500 on business development, and if you choose a trailer, for say ,000 that’s a total startup of ,500, ,000 or ,500.
Hopefully that gives you a general guide of what most people spend, but often times the amount of the budget spent on a vehicle and equipment is a lot higher. You can, of course, start with a lot less but of course compromises have to be made, and that may affect chances of your success. You can start with a lot more too if you have the means and a plan to successfully get a good return on your investment.
